Travel to Craiova
By plane:
Craiova International Airport – Craiova is currently connected to Barcelona El Prat (BCN), Bologna (BLQ), Cologne (CGN), Liverpool (LPL), London Luton (LTN), Madrid (MAD), Milan Bergamo (BGY), Paris Beauvais (BVA), Rome Ciampino (CIA), Valencia (VAL) and Venice Treviso (TSF). Flights are operated by Wizz Air and Ryanair.
Bucharest International Airport Henri Coanda (also known as the Otopeni Airport), which is well connected to many airports in Europe. The airport is connected to the North Railway Station by bus (780 express bus line, €1), by an express train (hourly, €1.5), or by taxi (€8 – €12).
By train (from Bucharest, Budapest, Sofia):
It takes about 3 hours by train from North Railway Station in Bucharest to Craiova. National Rail trains depart every 2 hours and the time table could be found at http://www.cfrcalatori.ro/ (price is around €14 for a single).
There is also a private company which runs two afternoon trains with on-board WiFi (€9 single ticket, more information and reservations at http://www.softrans.ro/).
By coach (from Bucharest)
Memento bus offers direct trips to Craiova from Bucharest (starting from €5!) or directly from “Henri Coanda” International Airport (starting from €7!), on the condition to book in advance. This may be a good option if arriving at OTP Airport but check schedule as coaches may be infrequent.
By car:
Craiova is situated at the junction of the European routes E70, E79 and E574. The customs offices are located in Bechet, Calafat, Giurgiu and Turnu Magurele at the Bulgarian border, in Drobeta Turnu-Severin and Jimbolia at the Serbian border, and in Nadlac, Bors and Cenad at the Hungarian border. Foreigners driving a car to Romania are required to hold a valid international driving licence. Car registration and insurance papers are also compulsory. Driving is on the right-hand side and the seatbelt is compulsory. The speed limit 130 km/h on highways, 100 km/h on national/european routes, 90 km/h on county routes and 50 km/h within residential areas. A road toll sticker (Rovinieta) is also compulsory for drivers and can be obtained from border crossing points, gas stations, postal offices, and online. The cost of a 7-day Rovinieta for an automobile is 3 euro.
Public Transport in Craiova
In Craiova, public transport is ensured by local buses and trams. The public transport in Craiova consists of 3 trolley tram lines and 17 bus lines. One ticket costs around €0.5.
Taxi services are relatively cheap and comfortable (around €0.3/km or 1.5 RON/km). Craiova is a relatively small city, any taxi costs approx 15 lei (< 3 euros) and it takes 10-15 minutes to take you anywhere! 🙂 We have Bolt 🙂
